It makes me so happy that Udd Gaye is the first hindi track on the playlist. Released in late November last year, Udd Gaye was an instant hit, and Ritviz, a young DJ became famous overnight. Translating literally to "We flew away," the song's success is easily recognised in the eclectic mix of Hindustani classical and electronic music. The "Electronic Raga Music," as a newspaper called it, Udd Gaye gives you best of both: the rich bass of electronic music while keeping it embedded in the richness of Indian classical. The song creates a contrast in sound, but the emotion is transmitted through that overlap of sounds.
There is a lot happening in the song. But I love it more for two reasons other than the brilliance of the track itself. One, it is not a mainstream Bollywood song. Ritviz's track was produced by a renowned DJ by the name of Nucleya and was released by a popular (and equally controversial) comedy group called All India Bakchod (AIB) on their Youtube channel. AIB’s massive audience helped garner more listeners for Ritviz. Second, the brilliance of the music video makes it an absolute must-watch. It is innocence laced with a sweet sadness, brought out all the more by the lyrics.
The next time you are hosting a house party or are otherwise in need of a beat, be sure to put this song on loop.
