Audrey Hepburn’s Grammy Award winning rendition of Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is an unforgettable classic. There is something so sweet and innocent about the New York socialite singing this song about expanding horizons sitting at her apartment window.
However, I prefer Andy Williams’s version of the track. I heard it first when Mr. Big tells Carrie he is leaving New York City for Napa Valley in Sex and the City Season 4. At the end of the episode, the song comes on again as Carrie walks home and discovers the first of the Fall leaves. The episode is very titled I Heart NY and interestingly I happened to have watched it soon after I spent Christmas in the city.
So for me, this particular version of Moon River is inseparable from New York City and the fuzzy feeling of the Holidays. The song itself has a distinct feeling of a cold afternoon on the streets of Manhattan pleasantly intruded by the warm feeling of love. As Andy Williams croons in his deep voice about “two drifters [who] are off to see the world,” happy things seem to be on the horizon.
If you are over the moon, deeply in love, or in NYC right now, listen to this song on repeat.
