Monsoon has officially hit the subcontinent and happiness is abound. The scorched earth and parched throats have heaved a sigh of relief and in welcoming this season, Advaita's Ghir Ghir beats a lot of other monsoon songs.
I first heard this years ago as a high school student. What sticks about this track and Advaita, in general, is their ability to render complex Hindustani classical tracks in a manner that is comprehensible to those not acquainted with the art form. The tracks are layered, incorporating elements of both rock and Hindustani classical, a combination that is seamlessly blended.
Ghir Ghir is as much a tribute to the monsoons as a call to it, replete with mentions of all that makes the monsoons so special. The vocals are rich and punctuated appropriately with guitar riffs that showcase the band's diverse range. The sarangi and its rich tones add such flavour to the track that one remembers it long after the track is faded out on your speakers.
