Jazz is not for the large stages: I have only ever truly enjoyed it in cosy and intimate settings. Autumn Leaves transports you to one of those warm jazz clubs where all that matters is the music--nothing else. This record completes the feeling of closeness with the background conversations seeping in under the strumming.
Autumn Leaves is representative of my favourite jazz instrument partnership. The way that Jim Hall's guitar and Ron Carter's bass complement each other is the stuff of legends. Out of the many renditions of Autumn Leaves, this one is downright my favourite. It is hard to explain what this track does to me or how it makes me feel. The Autumn Leaves are supposed to signify the decay of a romance, yet there is something rather reassuring about the track. Perhaps, there is strength in knowing that others experience the pain too.
If you need strength and reassurance this week, Autumn Leaves is your track.
