Sometimes I am rather grateful to my impromptu decisions. Last Saturday night was one such occasion, when on a whim a friend and I decided to go to Piano Man Jazz Club, here in Delhi. Saying that the artists were brilliant will be an understatement. I enjoyed the gig so much that I could not wait to share my favourite track from their album this week. The intimacy of Piano Man's setting made it possible to really enjoy the flavour of the album and the band's unique composition. Despite the sheer overall brilliance, the winner for me was the inclusion of two (absolutely amazing) drummers.
The reason I pick Ascent from the album is because it is full of surprises. From the slow piano led beginning to a literal ascent to an almost orchestral sound one minute into the track is unexpected to say the least. The build up is exciting and makes a shiver run down your spine. The guitar riff gels brilliantly with the faint backing vocals of Indian Classical inspiration. The fusion charges you up; as the album builds into this track and ends on this high note (pun entirely intended).
