“I know that it’s so easy to let your body get you down.” Truer words have never been spoken, Myylo. The thing is, more often than not, it is women who seem to discuss their body insecurities as opposed to men. For the men, there’s almost a notion that masculinity should eradicate emotions. It’s simply not true, and Nashville-based, LGBTQ pop musician Myylo tackles it head on with his anthem for boys of all shapes and sizes, “Skinny Boys.” He masterfully navigates a gray area, and empowers men, many of which have their own body insecurities, even if they fail to admit to them.
Myylo speaks from his own experiences as his pens and performs this gem, but also speaks for men in general, regardless of sexuality. “Every night as I’m laying on my mattress / I get so damn instantly distracted,” he sings on the first verse, continuing, “Scrolling up through these six pack abs / I know I’ll never have.” He addresses how seeing physical perfection, especially knowing you don’t possess it yourself, can totally steal your joy. Later, on the second verse, he mentions shouts out all the guys who put in the effort to attain perfection, closing with the quote mentioned from the jump. Ultimately, he admits how he doesn’t embody such perfection, yet instead of lamenting, he celebrates on the chorus:
“Give it up for the skinny boys
Give it up for the chunky ones
Cause we’re gonna have so much fun
Not give a fuck about anyone
Give it up for the boys
Never let them steal your joy.”
As aforementioned, truer words have never been spoken. Guys have their own insecurities, and Myylo speaks to that perfectly on this atoning pop gem. Masculinity isn’t atonement for anything, period! One of his most powerful statements: “I thank God for your body.”
