“‘Cause the harder that we grind / Then the sweeter is the glory.” Prudence and positive vibes, two things we all need in our lives! Alex Aiono previously mentioned the importance of not letting adversity destroy you and counting your blessings on “Good Morning”, the previous track added to Music to Atone to. R&B musician Aloe Blacc brings a similar, noteworthy message on “My Way.” Despite experiencing his own fair share of hardships in life, Blacc looks to his faith to atone for any negatives that might be ‘killing his vibe.’
Like so many of us, Aloe Blacc isn’t without tribulation – he’s been on ‘the struggle bus.’ Early on, he expresses sadness, feeling lost, lonely, and “In a world that tries to own me.” Similarly, on the second verse, he’s fighting against skeptics and darkness, but, he’s not afraid! Even with so much that should totally bog him down, instead of complaining or folding, he’s upbeat and prepared for the challenge. The ‘blind faith’ that some criticize him for truly propels him to a better place, even if he falls short in his endeavors – “If I crash, I don’t care / I’m gonna do it my way.” On the uplifting chorus of this bright, major-key contemporary soul cut, Blacc goes about the battle in “own way”:
“I can make it through this
You can throw the world in my face
But the fear gives me life
And I swear ‘til I die
I’m gonna do it my way.”
A key takeaway? Don’t let life, or the hardships that occur at various points, kill you. Never lose the willingness to fight and embrace positivity even in the midst of darkness. We should aspire for the faith and fight Aloe Blacc exhibits on “My Way.”
