“God, keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown, it gets harder.” More and more frequently, pop music incorporates elements of spirituality, whether it’s affirmation or skepticism of God’s existence. For Grammy-nominated, rock-tinged pop artist Avril Lavigne, it’s clear that her faith in the ‘Most High’ is incredibly strong on her long-awaited, 2018 comeback single “Head Above Water.” When one thinks about atonement, what better way to exhibit it than through a spiritual means? Furthermore, what better example than an uncharacteristic, inspirational ballad from a Canadian singer best known most for more punk-oriented hits?
In addition to being a testament to faith, the backstory of “Head Above Water” adds ‘fuel to the atoning fire’ you might say. Lavigne, who has been suffering with Lyme disease, was preparing to die due to the severity of her condition. Instead of dying, she’s alive and clearly thankful to God for bringing her through a truly scary storm. “Yeah, my life is what I’m fighting for,” she sings powerfully on the first verse, later adding, “And my voice becomes the driving force / I won’t let this pull me overboard.”
Clearly, Lavigne shows incredible resolve, and gratitude for making it through incredible adversity. One has to agree with her when she sings, “I’m too young to fall asleep.” “Head Above Water” is relatable to anyone experiencing adversity because it is a testimony of endurance and survival.
