Let’s take a step back. Let’s remember what it’s like to experience something new for the first time. It’s mysterious. It’s engaging. You end up in this little bubble that keeps getting bigger and you can’t get enough. This is the feeling I get every time I listen to Khruangbin. They have this sound that is so comforting, it melts away everything that is wrong with the world. It’s almost as though they have created a little universe with their music that only promotes happiness. Seriously try to listen to this song without a smile on your face.
As incredible guitar tone, huge snappy drums, a bassline that keeps on giving and a dusting of vocals are all Khruangbin needs to reel you in. Song after song they keep on giving; but we aren’t here to talk about the whole album, lets rap about White Gloves. Right from the beginning, the guitar takes precedence and remains the focal point even through the lyrics. The bass comes in with a huge impact and just grooves along right in the pocket the guitar leaves. It’s so easy to follow along and get lost in its hypnotic melody. On top of this, we get some soft vocals push back in the mix making the instruments shine through. The lyrics are very short simple sentences but slowly tells of a lady, a queen wearing white gloves. Underneath it all, enhancing the hip-hop drums, are some bongos, mixed in to just subtly accent the rhythm of the song. This is what makes that snare sound so unique, a layered in bongo.
Unlike most songs in this playlist, White Gloves doesn’t continually evolve and become this giant piece of music with meanings in every nook and cranny. This song stripes that all away and reminds us of how simple music really is. Music is a feeling, and this feeling often lost. Sit back and take a load off, let the music be and exist in its presence. Relax and let your mind become blank, be reminded of how simple it all really is. Put on your white gloves, and remember her as a queen.
