When you hear the word “parade” what do you think about? Probably a joyous occasion with people smiling and waving and celebrating with one another. But to Kevin Morby, a parade sets the scene for solitude and a pondering of his own life. As someone in the crowd, the people on floats seem important, but that is only an outward expression. Morby gives us a look inside what it can really be like to be put on display.
Parade is very interesting musically as it gives off a texture that can taken in two ways. One is of these is the happy, homecoming like feeling you get as the piano dances around the lyrics. The other is a darker, more sensitive feeling as the saxophone sings in the distance. Morby is able to create the same dichotomy in the lyrics as he does in the music, and that alone is something to write home about.
