Making a playlist with Brent is daunting, like The Hoof, he listens to so much music (check his extensive review site The Musical Hype) that it can be a little intimidating. But as always, the minute we started, it became easy and a lot of fun.
While I was generally pulling classics to Brent’s more up to date picks – I think we ended with a really nice flow – indeed – a conversation between two music lovers, spanning decades and genres and creating something unique for your ears!
Brent
I never fail to surprise, so Orville Peck it is!
C’mon Baby, Cry – Orville Peck
Andrew
I’m so glad we’re doing this 🙂
She Talks To Angels – The Black Crowes
Your turn!
Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All) – Omar Apollo
took me a think but – I added my next one – and had a nagging feeling that you’d probably written it up – and – lo and behold – you had on themusicalhype.com :-p. you can’t hold down great taste!
Time Alone With You (feat. Daniel Caesar) – Jacob Collier
Interestingly, I first heard this 2009 track (“Claustrophobia”) as a sample in an alternative hip-hop song. I see why it was sampled. I don’t think I’ve ever written about the song itself though, haha!
Claustrophobia – Choir Of Young Believers
I had two tracks that resonated off this- the groove had me reaching for Rocco DeLuca’s dope – the kick would have tied it together – but on repeat listening I couldn’t shake the melody from OK Computer’s climbing The Walls – which on further listening works really well on all levels 🙂
Climbing Up the Walls – Radiohead
Can’t go wrong with Radiohead, especially OK Computer. I lightened things up with a smooth, sexy Harry Styles track, “Cinema” from his new album, Harry’s House. You’re up
Cinema – Harry Styles
I really like the direction Harry Styles has gone in post his one direction days – seems that he really knuckled down and worked at his craft – and sure whale some of the tracks are pure sugar confections – overall I dig the groove :-). Similar kinda vibe on this track – Alfred is a local LA artist / producer that I dig 🙂
Cosmic Soul – New Blue
Good stuff! I had a couple of tracks in mind, but I realized there wasn’t a female lead artist on our list yet. So, after recently listening to the new Florence + The Machine album, I couldn’t exclude the deep, dramatic “Dream Girl Evil.”
Dream Girl Evil – Florence + The Machine
I am of course loving Dream Girl Evil – I have it on repeat while I write this – thank you 🙂
My mother lives in a small Scottish village – about 40 minutes drive north of Edinburgh – nothing much goes on there (certainly not anymore,) but for 20 years or so, the biggest music Festival in Scotland – T In The Park – took place a mile from her home.
It’s probably 2009 / 2010 – Florence was breaking and Dog Days are Over is everywhere – it’s morning in LA but early evening in Scotland and I’m listening to my mum – not complaining about the volume of the festival – but about Florence’s inability to keep pitch while singing her hit song. Having a trained Opera Singer as your mother can shape your opinion – I had a bad vibe around Florence for a long time – which was total bullshit and stupid of me – but – hell – I’m just grateful for the opportunity to go back and listen again.
Following this up with a stone cold one hit wonder…
Sleeping Satellite – Tasmin Archer
Great story and nice follow-up track! I considered a few tracks by this talented teenage artist two weeks ago when I went with the Flo + The Machine track instead. He appeared as one of my entries on Music to Atone to – his earlier stuff, of course. Let’s see what you come up with next!
Sunburn – Isaac Dunbar
I’ve been grooving on the track – the opening riff made an immediate association that took me several listens to work out what it wasn’t :-p
“You’re making it Worse” – hook – I’d say has the right ingredients
There is a reason why this track is next – something to do with the Klav on Sunburn’s intro –
End of a Century – 2012 Remaster – Blur
Can’t go wrong with Blur, right? I meant to add a new entry earlier but got caught up with website issues among other things. I went back to the mid-70s for my next pick… at least a decade prior to my birth. No rhyme or reason save for The O’Jays are awesome and if I chose the era I would’ve been born in it probably would’ve been the 70s with all the stellar rock, pop, soul, funk, etc. The less popular “Stairway to Heaven” but still awesome!
Stairway to Heaven – The O’Jays
The O’Jays, awesome indeed 🙂
was feeling the era – and the guitar solos…
Goodbye To Love – Carpenters
You can’t go wrong with Carpenters – timeless! I don’t consider myself a ‘country’ fan, but, when an artist, band, or song speaks to me, I’m on board. I started off the list with Orville Peck. This second country track earned this group their first Grammy at this year’s ceremony. Enjoy!
Younger Me – Brothers Osborne
it’s such a sound – 80’s style synths and his voice – so big and fat – it’s as if they took a country singer and sent him back in time to an 80’s new romantic vibe in Liverpool ;-p
Which I love!
But you have me thinking country – less Nashville and more – well starts rootsy and then just gets fun 🙂
You’re up
Ain’t A Road Too Long – Brent Cobb
Great choice with the Brent Cobb track. I used one of his songs for one of my list posts years ago. I like his sound and approach. Moving beyond country, this new track is modern alternative pop… something like that. This young musician has a distinct voice and style. Quite interesting.
venus fly trap – brakence
I love the production on the brakence track – what a great voice and vibe – already moved it over to a few other lists :-p
Coming back at you with another fresh sound – young duo out of Chicago – again I love the production but it’s such a summer groove. you’re up 🙂
3AM – DRAMA
Love the grooviness and production on that DRAMA track! Meant to add my follow-up sooner, but you know how things go! rei brown is an emerging Japanese alt-pop based in New York I believe. Anyway, he released his debut album (Xeno) in July. Lots of intriguing tracks, but I think the theme of “Haunt Me” should be relatable to most, at some point in their lives! Enjoy + you’re up!
Haunt Me – rei brown
I also really liked the rei brown track – sooooo much going on inside 3 1/2 minutes – that opening riff could have gone straight into Collective Soul’s The World I Know: https://open.spotify.com/track/1HSVpIU0XU1WuwiBLBWAZd?si=b5de3a1482a44082 – the track kept growing and by the time the heavy drum presence at 2:45 onwards – it almost felt like a different track – at least in terms in energy – so I went with the energy – I’m really digging KUČKA’s vocal on this track and Flume – well – he’s kind of on a roll 🙂
ESCAPE (feat. KUČKA) – Flume
Anyways, really enjoyed the Flume track. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to him (maybe like 2016!). Anyways, my latest addition is a 70s soul track by arguably a more underrated soul musician (Little Beaver) – at least compared to some of the biggest, most successful names in the genre. I do remember Joss Stone shouting him out on her debut project (https://open.spotify.com/track/30yn7KuCLbXGCXxjsB0C8K?si=a56b3b3c0788442c) back in the 00s (he played guitar on at least one record). I wrote about “I’m Losin’ the Feelin” in my THROWBACK VIBEZ column on The Musical Hype but simply couldn’t stop listening.
I’m Losin’ the Feelin – Little Beaver
I’m in love with that Little Beaver track – it’s such a classic groove – had me barreling down the Robert Cray rabbit hole – so many tracks that could of slotted beautiful in there but – half way down the journey I had this ridiculous urge to go and listen to Joan Armatrading 🙂
I don’t know if you’re familiar with her music but she’s been such an influence in my life – not just musically but how she lived and who she is – 🙂
So many tracks to add but – finishing with her eponymous debut – just beautiful!
Love And Affection – Joan Armatrading
