Grief Collection

An exploration of Grief

Why Have a Grief Collection?

Well, grief is a universal experience, and yet society can treat it as something to hide or rush through. There’s plenty of stigma and misinformation out there, especially around the idea that we should all move through specific stages in a set order. Our experience has been that, grief is messy, unique, and deeply personal. Our aim is to normalize how “un-normal” it can be.

Unresolved or unexpressed grief can take a serious toll on our physical and mental health. It can lead to prolonged depression, anxiety, and even physical illness. That’s why we think sharing stories and experiences is so important. By bringing our stories into the light, we hope to change the conversation around grief, showing that there are countless ways to navigate through it.

As with all musicto collections, we pair these stories with playlists. We have found music to be a safe way to connect. While it might be tough to fully empathize with someone’s grief, connecting over a shared love for a song can create a low-risk, meaningful interaction. Sometimes, sharing a memory tied to a track is exactly the connection someone grieving needs.

We’re looking for stories from those who are grieving and from professionals working in the grief world – charities, non-profits, and more. If we can raise visibility around grief, we can change the conversation, and normalize the completely unique and bizarre ways we experience it. Our stories, paired with music, can be a really cool way to create connection and healing.

We’d love to hear your story. If you scroll down the page you’ll see where you can share it with us.

Break the Bottle – Jess Silk

God I love the story tellers.

The lyricists who construct a reality you can step into, to experience it as if you were there – as if you knew the characters – who do it so seamlessly that – even if it is by proxy – you get to feel the emotions for real.

That’s the point of this list – it’s designed to make you feel – to connect with the emotions that we’re oh so good at keeping hidden, buried under guilt and social conditioning. Because when we don’t deal with those emotions – well – that’s when the bad shit happens…

The first visual memory I have is that of the white upright piano in Singapore, Hell and the Dark Forces lived at the bottom, Heaven and the Angels at the top, they would play battles through my fingers and I was hooked.

As a psychology graduate I studied how sound affects human performance.

As a musician I compose instrumental music that stimulates your brain but doesn't mess with your language centers, leaving you free to be creative and brilliant without distraction.

As a curator I research how music can improve your life and create flow - I can tell you what music to listen to when studying for a test and why listening to sad music can make you feel better.

As a creator / contributor at musicto I’m part of a global creator community that collaborates through music.  You can learn more about our community here.
